At Cafe Georges, Friday is a very popular seafood buffet extravaganza, while on Wednesdays, a local favourites buffet is offered. But no matter the theme, it is always busy in here and so you can be sure that the food hasn’t been waiting around long. I went on a Friday, and had some top mussels served a variety of ways, all sweet and delicious, some great scallops with black bean sauce – the salty black beans went fantastically well with the sweet scallops – and some great oysters – topped with a creamy cheese topping and baked until golden and bubbling: absolutely delicious. From the a la carte menu, I tried a trilogy of smoked salmon, trout and swordfish, all very fresh and entirely commendable, and some braised veal cheeks so tender you could have eaten them with a spoon – wonderful. The service was friendly and helpful, the wine list was short but succinct, and the old world setting was charming, too.
