All are very well seasoned and dripping with delicious fatty, meaty juices, and the selection is massive for a restaurant this size. There is also a small but excellent buffet spread which includes cold seafood items, and a selection of salads and pasta cooked to order. Apart from the meat (I’m still drooling from my encounter with some dark, grilled sirloin) the desserts were the highlights, particularly the cakes, and the most unusual and delicious one was surely the carrot cake flavoured with nutmeg and topped with peanut butter.WINE: A selection that spans New and Old World, with only a few available by the glass.

Terrace, Rasa Sentosa Resort

With the tropical sea lapping onto a white sandy beach and fairy lights twinkling in the distance, it is highly likely that most people come here simply for the romantic resort setting, but the food is pretty good too: a starter of saffron-scented Norwegian seafood soup was delicious – rich with crab and lobster shells and good firm white fish: but it was sad to think that the chef felt he had to look to Norway for his piscine inspiration. Main dishes such as a generous slab of grilled New Zealand sirloin and a thin and succulent paillard of veal served with a tasty béarnaise sauce got good reviews from my companions, but the highlight for me was the grilled sole, so fresh only a scattering of chopped fresh dill, crispy sea salt and a drizzle of lemon juice were needed. Service is friendly and casual.WINE: A decent selection dominated by New World wines.

But the a la carte items looked rather better – so this is what I went for. A tender and spicy chicken satay with a delicious pineapple marmalade; and the Oscar’s burger — a thick, juicy and beef patty made with coarsely minced, prime beef cuts and wedged into a thick sliced bun — were uber-delish.

Here there is a compact a la carte menu offering Western and local standards, but the draw of this coffee house is definitely its daily buffet. To start with I went for some freshly shucked oysters and thinly sliced smoked salmon, and then proceeded on to the ‘live’ stations: 5 generous slices of pingingly fresh sashimi later, I moved on to some teppanyaki tuna and vegetables – all fresh and very delicious. The main dining area was a bit crowded when dinner got into full swing, so next time I would request a table in the foyer. Service is generally pleasant, albeit a little elusive when the pace picks up, and one of those ubiquitous chocolate fountains with strawberries to dip served to provide a decent dessert.

WINE: By the glass selection is limited to some good Australian wines, and a smattering of French wines are available by the bottle.

But no matter the theme, it is always busy in here and so you can be sure that the food hasn’t been waiting around long. I went on a Friday, and had some top mussels served a variety of ways, all sweet and delicious, some great scallops with black bean sauce – the salty black beans went fantastically well with the sweet scallops – and some great oysters – topped with a creamy cheese topping and baked until golden and bubbling: absolutely delicious. From the a la carte menu, I tried a trilogy of smoked salmon, trout and swordfish, all very fresh and entirely commendable, and some braised veal cheeks so tender you could have eaten them with a spoon – wonderful. The service was friendly and helpful, the wine list was short but succinct, and the old world setting was charming, too.

The ambience is laid back and charming, and the service is likewise. On top of that, the restaurant offers one of the best buffet deals in Singapore – apart from a fresh, iced selection of seafood that includes slipper lobsters and oysters, the outdoor grill station — located literally almost in the jungle — can be requested to grill anything you want. This time we went for some char-grilled beef and lamb, succulent and cooked exactly how we like it, and, just to make an occasion of it, a lobster – grilled until sweet, crustaceous, smoky and delicious. Special mention must be made of the Indonesian ayam panggang, a dry chicken curry and one of the best dishes on the buffet. And I have to admit that while the a la carte lamb cutlets and salmon steak Nicoise ordered by some of my companions were distinctly out of place, they were well-cooked and delicious. All in all, everything here adds up to a very pleasant, relaxed dining experience. WINE: A short wine list with two cracking whites and two corking reds as house pours.
