Come dinnertime, this opulent art-deco 1930s Shanghai-style restaurant springs to life with performers crooning old Chinese songs and a mind-boggling array of dishes. Starters of light, crisp deep-fried eel and a delicious dish of quivering pork terrine in aspic will whet your appetite for more. The Hangzhou duck soup is dark, forbidding and rich, while the quintessentially Shanghainese xiao long bao were soft, dense and meaty. For sweets, I had an indulgent toffee banana prepared right by my table – a lovely combination of theatrics and taste in keeping with the old world style: a perfect ending to the meal.
