Set on the upper level of a striking old waterfront temple, decked out in striking Chinois decor, and boasting dishes with flamboyant names like Romance of the Kingdom and Sea Warrior soup, Restaurant Madame Butterfly seems to be aiming more for drama than deliciousness. And it shows in the food. Whilst the Summer Palace duck and the fish maw in chicken essence are popular with the regulars here, the theoretically heartier, Western–style dishes such as seared lobster and tenderloin of pork are uninspiring. The service is, however, well-informed, and helpful to a fault, the wine list has a good showcase of stunning Aussie numbers, and diners can also order from Cocoon bar and the alfresco Vietnamese restaurant next door for some variety: so it’s not all bad.
