Due to a recent redevelopment, Clarke Quay has become livelier and is drawing in the young and trendy crowd, and the restaurants lined up on the Singapore River bank are doing very well out of this. One such place is the Quayside Seafood Restaurant, a cheery joint which used to cater to bus-loads of tourists, but now entertains droves of walk-in customers. The seafood served here could hardly be fresher: the tastes of the crab in salted egg, the Indonesian prawn in claypot and the fried calamari are all testament to this – sparkling with sweet sea-fresh flavours. Now for the bad news; the minimum weight order for live seafood dishes is 700g, which can be a restriction for a dinner party of two looking for variety; one wishes that the cooks would not be so liberal in their use of curry leaves; and I’m afraid to say that the assistant manager had a dismaying lack of food knowledge. But the rest of the wait staff were generally charming and efficient. In all, worth a try, especially if you are with a larger group.
