The fiery fare at Szechuan Court is said to have been toned down to suit local palates, but after going there, I can only presume that truly ‘authentic’ Szechuan cooking must only use chillis and magma. Thankfully at Szechuan Court they serve some delightful foodstuffs alongside the chillis: my fiery dish of spicy minced pork noodles was rich, robust, and perfectly hot enough, thank you very much. Another good dish was the classic dish of spicy stir-fried string beans: just lovely – crunchy, spicy and savoury, and perfect with a steaming bowl of fluffy white rice. A dish of camphor-smoked duck was refreshing after all that heat, and intrigued with its pine-y aroma. And a range of pillow-y dim sum was available to soothe aching palates. To end the meal, you’ll probably want to go for one of their refreshing desserts: like the crystal clean chilled apple and hasma with lotus seeds or the tart, cold plum in yoghurt.
