A slick black and white decor and liberal use of plate glass give this restaurant a formal, modern air, which, teamed up with its location, attracts many rich business types for power lunches and corporate dining. Cosy booths at the side, however, provide a more intimate space for those out for a romantic meal. Lots of effort is taken to create menus for vegetarians and for diabetics that are just as good as the regular menus, which is always a good sign. We started with an interesting appetizer of scallops cooked three ways: in wasabi and mirin (not great), drizzled with orange sauce (better) and as a tartar with salsa verde (perfect, why bother trying to be fancy with scallops this good?), all served with an excellent Australian fizz recommended to us by the fantastically knowledgeable sommelier (lord knows we needed him, what with the 8000 bottles to choose from). A light seafood broth impressed with its clean, sea flavour, as did the beef carpaccio, generously sliced as it should be, and presented elegantly with a drizzle of good olive oil and slivers of good old Reggiano. Perfectly cooked, firm angel hair pasta Siciliana – piled high with rich tomatoes and creamy aubergine - and a luxurious gnocchi dish - truffle-studded and slathered in good melting duck confit and smoked duck - had us feeling very cheerful. Mains of braised pork with prune jus, and a succulent grilled best end of lamb served with a drizzling of chilli chocolate sauce were also successful, although perhaps a bit of a let down after the first few courses.
